Would be fun to look the news at your sleeve :)

Thy /.ing shall begin in a few minutes...

One step closer in being your favorite tamagotchi creature! Might also be used for matchmaking ^_^

Posted by DarkFader at July 9, 2004 01:59 AM

/.ed and burninated, awesome idea though, instead of changing ur shirt, u could just upload a new animation or design :) how lazy will we get if this hits the mainstream?

Posted by AwakenedStream at July 9, 2004 02:08 AM

This is really cool. Watch out though as you have been /.ed

Posted by Mike Leigh at July 9, 2004 02:14 AM

Nice, I would like to display a nice movie on my t-shirt and see all people on the subway trying to watch it.

Posted by davaguco at July 9, 2004 02:37 AM

Hmm... it may be comfortable, but can it stand the average shirt lifecycle of being machine-washed?

Posted by Azmeen at July 9, 2004 02:39 AM

FUCK SLASHDOT, AND THOSE FUCKIGN NERDS

Posted by marc at July 9, 2004 02:42 AM

Without "FUCKIGN NERDS" the internet wouldn't exist.

Well, this Tshirt looks pretty cool but there's a big problem : batteries

I guess the battery will last like 5 hours because the light area is kind of big. So you only look cool for a short time.

If you use high capacity batteries, the TShirt will be too heavy and it will suck

Posted by Bangbus at July 9, 2004 02:48 AM

My guess is that the electronic parts can be removed before washing the clothing.

There are a lot of ( mainly fun ) uses to this.

How long till we get people with flash banners walking the street. :)

Why is this news again?

The idea of paintable/rollable displays has been under research by Philips for years, and they've already made far more headway, using less power and giving FAR greater resolution by abandoning LCD and switching to PolyLED and/or OLED.

The only addition here is that your phone apparently can BlueTooth (or whatever) the signal to your wearable display. Which in itself I find offensive, because why shouldn't you just integrate an entire GSM chipset with the display altogether!?

Cyclists might use this to display,
on the back of their t-shirt,
the back of a motorbike or car,
with brake light and turn signal.
Helps being better seen by car drivers.

Why is the model wearing a Star Trek uniform ?

Posted by Trekkie at July 9, 2004 03:05 AM

Nice work Volker. Excellent idea. I can also imagine a copper with his hat flashing like a siren while he is chasing some hacker down the street (whose shirt back pops up with an expressive middle finger).

Looks great! Does anyone have a video of this?

Posted by Outze at July 9, 2004 04:10 AM

How about bluetooth connectivity and have a morphing program which uses RFID technologies to develop characters and character responses to those that are in the close vicinity?

Posted by JaJ at July 9, 2004 04:18 AM

I for one welcome our new hi-tech t-shirt wearing overlords!

Posted by EEEeee at July 9, 2004 04:20 AM

Marc, now that's not very nice (almost as lame as the FP group that dropped by, all of them.)igargoyle should be very happy that so many people in a key market are aware of this new product. I mean this could be a catalyst to drive the demand internationally, or you might just get the chance to watch your server die. Either way, Cheers and Good Luck!

Posted by Fuckign at July 9, 2004 04:28 AM

if you wanna see the people who thought of this over 8 years ago, and what their product has become (like paper thin e-books with near paper contrast), check out www.e-ink.com

That's a good idea: "NO SPAM"... I like it. I might even not wait for a display t-shirt to get one like that. But I'm surprised it comes from France Telecom... after all, they're only a phone/ISP/cell phone provider company. But I'll go with it. It's probably not cheap though... any guess on when we'll be able to buy those things?

Posted by Goeland86 at July 9, 2004 08:33 AM

This isn't news "again". Philips has not produced a prototype or alpha release of thier technology, they've been only dabbling with it. Please show proof that "for years" which is disingenuous in itself, that Philips is even a half step away from what was posted?

Where do you see BLUETOOTH referenced here? You're the one that brought that up, and assumed that GSM (Which isn't even in 100% implementation yet) wont be a part of it.

Stop jumping to conclusions and please reference your information if you're going to make accusations, thanks.

somebody get out a broom and clean out the lame posts....shame on you...laugh

Wow, this looks great! If it works wirelessly, imagine the hacking that people will do! Drive-by shirt spamming!

Posted by NetObjects Fusion at July 9, 2004 12:09 PM

I just recently saw on TV that a Japanese developer is making a form of military camouflage like that, with cameras on the back of the soldier's jacket that displays the recording on a lot of miniature screens on the front of it, creating the illusion of transparency.

Posted by dread cowboy at July 9, 2004 12:58 PM

I can't wait until they make mood rings that control the display. Or maybe or hormone level tester or something that can display "I am on PMS" for women so we'll know when to be extra nice . . .

Posted by someguy at July 9, 2004 02:10 PM

that retard is so anoying, i wonder if there is some way to ip-ban him or something...... BTW i want one of those shirts it would say the stuff from the jinx.com shirts

The applications are endless -- especially for advertizers who wish to target their message. Want to entice that last dollar out of the consumer's pocket? For instance, McDonalds could suggestively place two ice cream cones on the boobs of their staff.

Posted by Andy Dabydeen at July 10, 2004 05:39 PM

Integrate this with wifi or some sort of wireless such as bluetooth. Read the other person's ideas, and get to hack-cocreate-spam their garments.
If toothing is with only a few buttons, the possibilities here are endless!
Rave!!!
